Smt.Allum Sumangalamma Memorial College for Women, one of the premier educational institutions in fostering Women Education was established in the year 1969 by Veerashaiva Vidyavardhaka Sangha, Ballari.  After a decade, the Department of Commerce was established by the founder staff members Dr. K.Tejasmurthy and Dr. S. Jayanna and   started B.Com. course with a moderate strength in the year 1979. In due course of time, during the year 1997 B.B.M. Course was introduced. In the year 2010, the “Business Laboratory” was inaugurated for the exclusive benefit of students pursuing Commerce Course. Finally, the Post Graduate Course in Commerce was started in the year 2014. Thus, the campus provides the basic education from UG to PG in Commerce for women folk of this Hyderabad Karnataka Region presently known as Kalyana Karnataka. The College was initially affiliated to the Gulbaraga University, Gulbarga, later on from 2003-04 onwards, it has been affiliated to Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women’s University, Vijayapura, till date. The strength of the students has been continuously increasing since the inception of the department. The results of the department also gained momentum in the recent years with the concerted efforts of the management, teachers and non-teaching staff of the College.  This is very much evident from the result analysis over a period of time.

      The Department of Commerce celebrated its Silver Jubilee in the year 2004. Many teachers served in the Department on permanent and temporary basis.  Dr. K.Tejas Murthy and Dr. S.Jayanna joined as a founder staff members of the Department.  Dr. S. Jayanna later on elevated to the P.G.Centre of the then Gulbarga University, Gulbarga, later on became the Dean of Management Studies in the newly formed University, Ballari. Dr. K.Tejas Murthy became the Principal of the College and pioneered the introduction of P.G. Course  and attained superannuation in the 2014. The Department also had the privilege of brief stint of service rendered by Smt. Shailaja Hiremath, Dr. M.N. Karur, Mr. Ganganna, Mr. Rangaiah, Dr. Sadyojathappa, presently working as Associate Professor at V.S.K.University, Ballari, and  Dr. Prahlad Choudhary, Prof. Ganga, Prof. Muralishanakar Goud, Prof. Gurubasappa who are working in Government First Grade Colleges in Ballari .

    Prof.B.T.Patil also served in the department for many years and got transferred to our sister institution Veerashaiava College, Ballari and Dr. Y.B. Kumsi also served as a Head of the Department and also Principal of the College for a brief period of time. The Department also had the invaluable services of Prof. A. Mallikarjun Reddy as Head of the Department till 2020 and Prof. U.Somasekhar, NSS Officer, and Prof. Sharanappa, as the in charge Principal, who were in turn  retired during 2020, 2021 and 2023 respectively.

    The dedicated faculty of the department identifies every promising student and help in boosting their confidence and competence by conducting extra classes, special coaching classes and tests. Apart from, the slow learners are also identified by the respective staff dealing with the subject and taken care of by tutorials and special remedial classes.  The students joining the Commerce course from other than the P.U. commerce stream are given special attention to provide the fundamentals of Business Studies and Accountancy subjects.  Above all, the mentoring system in practice helps to resolve any of the academic issues faced by the students in the Department.

       At present, the Department is having one permanent staff members viz., Dr. Gavisiddappa Gadag , Head of the Department and Coordinator of P.G. Studies in Commerce & BBA Programs. Mr.Gangadhar K from 2011, Ms. Anupama K from 2017, and Ms.Mamatha K during 2022 are also equally supporting the academic work as a Guest Faculty member in the Department. Dr.K.Gangadhara and Dr.Anupama pursued Ph.D., course on a part-time basis in Department of Development Studies at  Kannada University, Hampi and successfully awarded Ph.D. during 2023 and 2022 respectively. The staff members are highly qualified, experienced and dedicated in discharging their duties and responsibilities. The Department is having “Commerce & Management Association”, which is responsible for conducting curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities in accordance with the calendar of events formulated by the IQAC of the College. The seminars and webinars particularly during Covid-19 pandemic are conducted at regular intervals.

     Thus, the Department is growing by leaps and bounds with the unsolicited co-operation from the management, principal, the teaching and non-teaching staff members and above all the main stake holders of the institution being students in general and the parents in particular.
