About the Department 

Smt. A.S.M. College for Women, is one of the premier educational institution in fostering Women education, was established in the year 1969 by Veerasaiva Vidyavardhaka Sangha, Ballari. I take this opportunity to state that Smt. A.S.M. College for Women has the distinction of being the first and the only Women’s Degree College in the district exclusively serving the cause of Women’s Education in Science. Plants are an integral part of human life as they provide food, shelter, health and wealth besides oxygen. Botany is one of the fundamental disciplines of science dealing with the study of plant life. The Department of Botany in Smt. ASM College came into existence in 1973 and Botany was introduced as a major subject for B.Sc. under Karnataka University, Dharward. When the Gulbarga University was established in the year 1980, the college came under its jurisdiction and presently it is affiliated to Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women’s University, Vijayapura from 2003-04 onwards till date. The intake capacity of the department is up to 100 students per each class. The Department is fully concerned with B.Sc., program with an impressive strength.

The entire teaching faculty who served in the the department were qualified and dedicated in imparting the relevant knowledge and duties up to the satisfaction of students. There are, at present, five faculty members viz., Dr. Bheemanagouda N. Patil, Dr. Basavarajeshwari Hediganal, Ms. Shubha VHM, Ms. Pallavi P and Ms. Shushma V.H. who are all fully qualified, able and efficient enough in discharging their duties with diligence and commitment. They take keen interest in their work and well versed in curricular and co-curricular activities of the department. The faculty members represented the College in the various academic activities. The staff members are involved in University BoS and BoE Meetings and contributed to university academic activities. Meetings are held regularly to discuss the curricular activities, distributing the syllabus, preparing lesson plan, preparation of question papers and result analysis. The students are regularly evaluated and trained through Internal Assessments, Seminars, Presentations, Preparatory Examinations etc., to face the Final Examination with confidence. The staff members are actively involved in research and publication in journals. The department has well equipped laboratory with specimen museum and computers with Internet facility. The students studying B.Sc. with Botany combination are constantly secured university academic ranks every year and got P.G. seat in various disciplines.

Scope of the Subject

Botany is emerging as one of the potential areas for career and research within the country and abroad. Aspirants having B.Sc. degree in Botany can find a lot of career opportunities in both public sector and private sector. They can join Botanical Survey of India (BSI), National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), Karnataka Forest Department etc. as a Research Associate. Graduates of this subject can opt for post-graduation in Life-Science, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Toxicology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, etc. Applied Post-Graduate courses in Environmental Sciences, Agro Forestry and Forensic Science can also be pursued.
