            Smt. A.S.M. College for Women, one of the premier educational institutions in fostering Women education was established in the year 1969 by Veerashaiva Vidyavardhaka Sangha, Ballari. Department of Zoology in 1969 but became full-fledged in the year 1973, when Zoology was introduced as a major subject under Karnataka University, Dharward. When the Gulbarga University was formed in the year 1980, this College came under its jurisdiction and presently it is affiliated to K.S.W.University, Vijayapur from 2003-04 onwards. B.Sc. with three optional subjects was introduced which included Zoology and the intake capacity of the department is 80. I take this opportunity to state that Smt. A.S.M. College for Women had the distinction of being the first and the only Women’s Degree College in the district and even now only one in the city exclusively serving the cause of Women’s Education in Science.

         The Department is fully concerned with B.Sc., course with an impressive strength. All the teaching faculty of the department were qualified and dedicated in importing the duties and to satisfaction of students. Their contribution to the department is high. There are, at present, three faculty members viz., Sri. D.Satheesh, Miss Reshmarani and Smt. J. Sunitha who are fully qualified, able and efficient enough in discharging their duties with diligence and commitment. They take keen interest in their work and well versed in curricular and co-curricular activities of the department. The faculty members represented the College in the various academic activities. The atmosphere in the department is congenial especially with the able guidance of the Principal. Meetings are held regularly to discuss the curricular activities, particularly distributing the syllabus and preparing teaching plan and preparation of question papers and for result analysis. The other important features of the department is a preparation Question Bank with University model questions and conducting test to make students well prepared for examinations. The students are regularly evaluated and trained through Internal Assessments, Seminars, Preparatory Examinations etc., to face the Final Examination with confidence.

The Department organizes regular one day field study visits nearby places related to syllabus and one week study tours are organizing distant places of important Zoological study places to enrich the practical knowledge.

          Apart from this, we share the responsibilities office staff in discharging the duties particularly involving ourselves in various committees of the College. Imparting qualitative higher education the teachers are encouraged to take up faculty development programmes. This has resulted in widening the knowledge horizon of the faculty so that they are competent to deliver their knowledge to students of this department. Sri.           In the year 2010, UGC is granted a minor research project to the Department i.e. On Study of Physico-Chemical Parameters and Zooplankton Diversity of Narihalla water reservoir, Sandoor Tq., Ballari District. Amount sanctioned for this Project is Rs.1,35,000/- and completed.
